The goal of this workshop is to explore and exchange ideas on topics emerging from both science fiction and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). In particular, the main aims are to discuss the contradictions between science fiction and HCI, explore and elaborate on various methodologies that can be used to evaluate fictional content, and how fiction can be used to inspire design.

Topics include:

  1. The visionary science fiction and its impact on the development of HCI across the various modalities of touch, vision and speech.
  2. The impact on HCI researchers of the tendency of humans to disassociate fictional content from the real world.
  3. The pros and cons of various methodologies (social media, ratings, lab studies, qualitative analysis of feedback and comments on public platforms) that are used to evaluate fictional content in order to determine what aspects of fictional content are the most/least desired by humans.
  4. Design Fiction or the methodology to propagate and present ones own design and its application through fictional medium (such as narratives and storyboards).
  5. The role of fiction as a design inspiration for the related areas of HCI such as Human Robot Interaction, Human Information Interaction, Human Information Behavior, Mobile Computing, and Ubiquitous Computing.
