These devices simultaneouslytrack the positions and orientations ofboth user hands in different postures with at least 25frames per second. Such hand-tracking allows for usingthe human hands as natural input devices. However, the absence of physical buttons for performingclick actions and state changes poses severe challengesin designing an efficient and easy to use 3D interfaceon top of such a device. In particular, for coupling anddecoupling a virtual object’s movements to the user’shand (i.e. grabbing and releasing) a solution has tobe found. In this paper, we introduce a novel techniquefor efficient two-handed grabbing and releasingobjects and intuitively manipulating them in the virtualspace. This technique is integrated in a novel3D interface for virtual manipulations. A user experimentshows the superior applicability of this new technique.Last but not least, we describe how this techniquecan be exploited in practice to improve interactionby integrating it with RTT DeltaGen, a professional CAD/CAS visualization and editing tool.
