12/15/06 - Scientific Committee Extended
The Journal of Virtual Reality and Broadcasting has extended its Scientific Committee by three new international experts: Prof. Dr. Michael Young (USA), Prof. Dr. Seungyong Lee (South Korea) and Dr. Konstantinos Chorianopoulos (Germany). In a confidential election, the current committee members voted for the newly introduced candidates and agreed to the committee’s extension.
Prof. Dr. Young is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at North Carolina State University and his research interests include artificial intelligence, interactive narrative and entertainment.
Prof. Dr. Lee is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), South Korea, and conducts research in the field of computer graphics, animation and image processing.
Dr. Chorianopoulos is organizer of European Interactive TV conference in Athens, Greece, and researcher in the field of human-computer interaction, e-commerce and interactive TV.
The Scientific Committee is formed by international scientists in the field of Virtual Reality and Broadcasting and forms an extended base of academic expertise. The Committee discusses guidelines, general rules and topics of the journal. Taking part in the review process, they also serve as exponents in the recruitment process of prospective reviewers. Moreover they are responsible for encouraging and motivating potential authors to submit articles to the journal.

08/29/06 - HC’2006 Video Conference Session “Virtual Environments and Visualization”
On September 8th, 2006, a video conference session between the University of Aizu, Japan, and the Duesseldorf University of Applied Sciences is established within the scope of the 9th International Conference on Humans and Computers HC’2006. From 3 to 6.30 p.m. (JST)/8 to 11.30 a.m. (CET) up-to-date research results from the field of virtual environments and visualization are presented in nine lectures from both Aizu and Duesseldorf. Afterwards, the participants have the opportunity for questions and discussions on the topic. The network conference continues the successful cooperation that has been established in the previous years. It is the second HC-Conference that offers both a live video connection to Tokyo and Duesseldorf.

05/08/06 - Publication Agreement with EuroITV
The Journal of Virtual Reality and Broadcasting has made a publication agreement with the organizers of the 4th European Interactive TV Conference, which is held from May 25th – 26th 2006 in Athens, Greece. The conference brings together experts from various fields of research including human-computer-interaction, media studies and telecommunication to discuss a wide range of aspects of interactive TV and entertainment. Besides technical issues, also the ethical, commercial or creative point of view is brought up. JVRB will publish a number of selected best papers in a special issue in volume 3.2006.

05/05/06 - Playing with the Real World
The first number of volume 3.2006 contains the article "Playing with the Real World" by Paul Holleis, Matthias Kranz, Anneke Winter, and Albrecht Schmidt. It introduces a framework that is designed to create applications that use non standard input devices like balance cushions, magnets or other sensor-equipped gear. These new applications are not limited to a specific context or background and invite the user to interact/play with the real world.
In this paper we provide a framework that enables the rapid development of applications using non-standard input devices. Flash is chosen as programming language since it can be used for quickly assembling graphical applications. We overcome the difficulties of Flash to access external devices by introducing a very generic concept: The state information generated by input devices is transferred to a PC where a program collects them, interprets them and makes them available on a web server. Application developers can now integrate a Flash component that accesses the data stored in XML format and directly use it in their application. We show two examples, one from a pervasive gaming background and one from an installation in an office setting.

01/24/06 - JVRB publishes Volume 2.2005, Number 1
The Journal of Virtual Reality and Broadcasting has published the first number of the volume 2.2005. It contains the article “Interactive Ray Tracing for Virtual TV Studio Applications” by Andreas Pomi and Philipp Slusallek. The article is available from the Journal’s website in different file formats.
In the last years, the well known ray tracing algorithm gained new popularity with the introduction of interactive ray tracing methods. The high modularity and the ability to produce highly realistic images make ray tracing an attractive alternative to raster graphics hardware.
Interactive ray tracing also proved its potential in the field of Mixed Reality rendering and provides novel methods for seamless integration of real and virtual content. Actor insertion methods, a subdomain of Mixed Reality and closely related to virtual television studio techniques, can use ray tracing for achieving high output quality in conjunction with appropriate visual cues like shadows and reflections at interactive frame rates.
In this paper, we show how interactive ray tracing techniques can provide new ways of implementing future virtual studio applications.

01/13/06 - Successful Cooperation between PerGames Workshop and JVRB continues in 2006
A selection of high quality articles from the “Third International Workshop on Pervasive Gaming Applications - PerGames 2006” will be published in a forthcoming issue of the Journal of Virtual Reality and Broadcasting. The agreement continues the successful cooperation between the two partners that has been established last year.
PerGames 2006 is held on May 7th 2006 in conjunction with 4th International Conference on Pervasive Computing (PERVASIVE 2006) in Dublin, Ireland, and addresses the design and technical issues of bringing computer entertainment back to the real world with pervasive games. The workshop brings together international researchers from the field of interactive entertainment and provides the opportunity to learn about the chances and risks that pervasive gaming introduces to it. Discussions serve to exchange results, experiences and visions and to identify relevant research questions.
Pervasive gaming as a form of interactive entertainment including virtual and mixed reality techniques and studies of human-computer-interactions offers important research results that may also have impact on virtual studio applications.
