Information Visualization and Interaction Techniques for Collaboration across Multiple Displays - In Conjunction with CHI2006
Montreal, Canada
Saturday, Apr 22, 2006 - Sunday, Apr 23, 2006 -
Most visualization tools available today have been optimized for conventional desktop displays and interaction devices and single-user interaction. The production of diverse, multi-sources, and dynamic data, though, is growing at exceptional rates, thus implying the need for collaboration in the analysis and management of information. Technology promises to support such collaboration, but several challenges need to be faced to realize the vision of supporting collaborative analytical reasoning. In this workshop, we want to exchange findings about extending visualization tools in two ways. First, we will investigate visualization across different display form factors. We are interested in display devices ranging in size from wristwatches and hand-held personal data assistants (PDAs) to high-resolution full-wall and theater-sized displays, as well as multi-display environments. Second, we are interested in using such systems for collaborative sense-making involving two or more users.

Strategies in menu selection will be guided by computational models of attention and the analysis of eye movements tracked in various scenarios. Advanced display technologies will make use of real-time high-quality computer graphics and simulation to visualize physical processes in space and time. High-end 3D avatars utilizing attention-based display generation will allow to speed-up processing. Advanced speech technology will make use of adaptive and user-state dependent dialogue strategies. Complex knowledge bases and reasoning capabilities will control ambient devices that automatically adapt to user requirements and communication styles and, in doing so, help reducing the mental load of the user.

ISMAR 2006 Workshop Industrial Augmented Reality
Santa Barbara, USA
Sunday, Oct 22, 2006 - Sunday, Oct 22, 2006 -
Augmented Reality has matured from a pure research field into actual industrial applications. There are still many research questions to solve, and solutions are discussed every year at the ISMAR conference series. However, making systems really work needs usually some more effort, knowledge, and ideas than can be discussed by academia on a purely scientific conference. The goal of this workshop is to bring together all people from industry and academia who use augmented reality technologies in real industrial settings aimed at producing a commercial benefit.

InfoVis 2006 - IEEE Information Visualization Symposium
Balitmore, MD, USA
Sunday, Oct 29, 2006 - Friday, Nov 03, 2006 -
Scope: Computer-based information visualization, or "infovis", centers around helping people explore or explain data through systems that include static or interactive visual representations. The central design challenge in infovis is designing a cognitively useful spatial mapping of a dataset that is not inherently spatial. There are many possible visual encodings, only a fraction of which are helpful for a given task. We draw on the intellectual history of several traditions, including computer graphics, human-computer interaction, cognitive psychology, semiotics, graphic design, statistical graphics, cartography, and art. The synthesis of relevant ideas from these fields is critical for keeping pace with the torrents of data that confront us all.

11th International Fall Workshop Vision, Modelling and Visualization 2006
Aachen, Germany
Wednesday, Nov 22, 2006 - Friday, Nov 24, 2006 -
Vision, Modeling, and Visualization are rapidly converging disciplines. For a long time the three fields were separate, each with their own methodology, terminology, and formalism. However, for many applications they have to work hand in hand based on computer models and data structures that can be used across all disciplines. Prominent examples are medical sciences, where novel and improved image sensors require new integrated vision, modeling, and visualization techniques. Also, due to the proliferation of digital photography and high-speed graphics accelerators, image-based modeling and the corresponding vision and visualization techniques have become a research topic of highest relevance. Topics include: - 3-D imaging - Object localization and recognition - Volume data processing and visualization - Multi-sensor fusion and 3-D registration - Medical image processing - Medical visualization - Structure from motion and stereo - Geometry-based and image-based rendering - Geometric modeling - Geometric processing - Scene modeling and integration - Multi-view image processing and coding - Realistic rendering - Animation - Virtual reality - Applications (medicine, robotics, fluid mechanics, manufacturing, automated inspection, virtual reality, communication, etc.)

Thursday, Nov 23, 2006 - Thursday, Nov 23, 2006 -
HCI&UE Workgroup - Austrian Computer Society: The interdependencies of humans, human culture and technology open new fields and trends, thus challenging the sciences to find new methods to understand these processes and to initiate new development. However, development tends to underestimate the needs and cultural habits of the end-users and often fails to thoroughly examine how they learn, work, and communicate with the help of these technologies. Consequently, we need to carefully study which combination of media, device, and application is most advantageous to the enhancement of human learning. Topics include but are not limited to: - Learning, Teaching and Motivating with innovative e-Learning Concepts - Learner Centered Design and Development (LCD) - Simulation based learning (SBL) - Adaptive Learning Environments (ALEs) - Multimodal Interfaces for e-Learning (MIeL) - Mobile and Pervasive Learning Technologies - Psychological and Pedagogical aspects of Multimodal Interfaces - Accessible Interfaces to Learning and Training Content - Comparison of methods of Mediainformatics, -psychology and -pedagogy - Just-in-time learning (Learning on Demand, embedded learning) - Learning design - Educational Theory and Media - Media Theory versus HCI (design of educational media; education by interfaces) - Educational Goals and HCIs - Ontology-driven HCIs in E-Education - Research methods to approach the HCI-usage of the online learner - Teaching methods and HCI - a contradiction? - The interdependencies of Informatics, Psychology and Educational Sciences as a challenge for the philosophy of sciences and educational practice as well as research

Applied Optimization in Virtual Product Development (Angewandte Optimierung in der virtuellen Produktentwicklung)
Fellbach (Stuttgart), Germany
Thursday, Nov 23, 2006 - Thursday, Nov 23, 2006 -
Workshop on Applied Optimization in Virtual Product Development. Further information is available in German only.

TV Outlook 2007 - The paradigm shift of TV consumption
Munich, Germany
Friday, Dec 01, 2006 - Friday, Dec 01, 2006 -
New ways of watching television are on the rise, challenging the traditional way of broadcasting. The latest and increasingly powerful trends of ‘user generated content’ platforms, IPTV, time and place shifting, the future of advertising as well as video and service usage in the connected home are being the main topics during the one day event. Excited by the huge potential in these new areas, both broadcast and telecommunication industry design service propositions and new business models going live all around the world. After sorting out the related technological issues, main attention needs to be paid to the quality of services. To ensure a return on investment for marketing activities and technology, providing best practice to elate a relevant number of active users will be key to the market. Customer retention will become probably one of the biggest challenges over the next years - irrespective of the platform, whether it will be Cable, Telco, PayTV, IPTV, Mobile or Web 2.0.
